#Resident evil hd remaster pc series
The beauty of the game can be appreciated though if you forget all other resident evil games (even resident evil 0) and just know that this is where it is at, and what fans of the series really ask for, it is that deliberate slow pace, limited controls, really exploring the environment and the items you pick up - all of this really help draw you in to the world it is set in and this is why this game is the best survival horror there is. The trouble with it though is that its the type of game that seems a bit old fashioned by todays standards, Resident Evil 4 and 5 (and 2 remake) always seem to be the most popular so people know about Resident Evil because of those games so when they play this one it feels hard to get into, the deliberate slow pace and item management can be a real drag for those that want to explore a mansion and kill zombies. The music is familiar, the puzzles are extended, it is the perfect survival horror game.

No - this is what the remake does best, it carefully remixes these scenes up, especially in the first half - so just when you get the right items, and have to travel back through the corridor again THIS is when the dogs break through, genius.Įverything about this game preserves the original, the old story texts and the classic item management gameplay and extends the experience further with the death masks and the lisa trevor portion of the game. but in the remake they just hit the glass, not break through, so instantly fans of this game were thrown a curve ball, did they just take the dog corridor scene out?

For example, when you have already played the original (which a lot of us have back in the day), when this remake came out it was playing to new gamers but also fans of the series so when you get to the corridor with the dogs - you know that they are going to jump through the windows. With the remake, originally released on the gamecube, they have carefully looked at what made the original game work and fine-tune it to perfection.

#Resident evil hd remaster pc windows
The game is survival horror because of the staple gameplay mechanic that is a puzzle within itself, the whole game is like a puzzle you have to manage and solve and the jump scares come at just the right times to make you think again, like when the dogs smash through the windows in the original game - nothing truly shocking happens until this point and you know that this corridor is the only way forward and so the game knows then to throw the dogs at you (and ramp up the tense soundtrack) so this moment is very memorable because of this. All of these things, bad voice acting included, made the game very iconic. Well, the genre "survival horror" wasn't a thing back then, anything after Resident Evil was considered a Resident Evil clone because the genre contained the tropes that Resident Evil became famous for - static camera angle (or focus on the room you are in), hunting for items that enable you to progress through the game, a control system that handles like a tank (adding to the fear, like in a bad dream when you try to run but its like you are running on sand).

The classic Resident Evil when released back in 1996 made a real impact on release, everyone knew it was a game about zombies and had seen it either in a demo, in a magazine or perhaps watched a someone play it and got drawn into it in some way or another, but what made it have such an impact? I mean, Alone in the Dark was technically the first of this type of game that became a commercial hit, just what made Resident Evil stand out?
